Our Belgian Shepherd dogs are mostly employed as watchdogs and farm security, keeping predators at bay, chasing off varmints and every so often even catching a mouse. They are amazingly aware of "air space" and run out barking at large birds that soar out over our pastures, and I've seen large vultures veer off and float away over the neighbor's field instead of advancing in the face of the dogs' strenous objections.
They are part of farm life, and add imeasurably to the joys of living in the country!

We socialize our dogs to get along well with the other members of the farm, they love to go on walks with the goat herd, or run alongside with a horse ride. They accept the barn cats as farm family members, with each maintaining thier individual manner of treatment, as well as the tiny toy poodle (my 'sleeps on the bed dog') who is nearly always grouchy with 'the big dogs', (and it's not the fault of her advanced age now, she's always been that way!) |
